What to Expect After Implant Surgery

Mild swelling, tenderness, and light bleeding are normal after dental implant placement. These symptoms typically improve over the first few days. Following these instructions carefully will help support healing and protect your implant.

Bleeding

Some bleeding or oozing is normal for the first 24 hours. Bite gently on gauze for 30–45 minutes as instructed. Avoid spitting, forceful rinsing, or using straws, as these actions can disrupt healing.

Swelling and Discomfort

Swelling often peaks within 48–72 hours. Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first day. Take prescribed or recommended pain medication as directed.

Oral Hygiene

Do not brush the surgical area on the day of surgery. Beginning the next day, gently brush and floss surrounding teeth, avoiding direct contact with the implant site. Use any prescribed antimicrobial rinse exactly as directed.

Diet

Eat soft, cool foods for the first few days. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard foods that may irritate the area. Drink plenty of fluids, but do not use straws.

Activity

Rest on the day of surgery and avoid strenuous activity for at least 48 hours. Physical exertion can increase bleeding and delay healing.

Smoking and Alcohol

Do not smoke or use tobacco products during healing, as this greatly increases the risk of implant failure. Avoid alcohol while taking pain medication and during the early healing phase.

When to Call the Office

Contact the office if you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain that does not improve, swelling that worsens after several days, or signs of infection.
